What happens during the initial consultation?

The initial consultation is a way to discuss your goals for therapy, ask questions about your therapist and their approach, and address availability and fees prior to entering into a therapeutic relationship. The consultation also allows both parties to determine whether the therapist is capable of meeting your needs and is a good fit. If both are in agreement with proceeding, an initial assessment is scheduled.

What happens during my first appointment?

Your initial appointment will be a 90 minute assessment. During this session, the therapist gathers information, such as what brings you to therapy, your prior history in therapy, and other relevant information to better understand how to assist you. You and your therapist then collaborate to discuss treatment goals and create a care plan, including frequency of sessions, tailored to your unique needs. You are still free to decide against proceeding at any time.

What can I expect from counseling?

Counseling is a unique experience for each individual person. Our focus is to support your journey to improved mental and emotional well-being, and the path there depends upon your needs. Typically, counseling sessions are 45-50 minutes. The frequency of visits will be dependent upon your needs. We encourage and facilitate open communication, whether that be during a quick check-in, for support during life changes, or while processing deeper rooted issues. Regular attendance, active participation in session, and completing homework outside of session are all crucial parts of therapy and your success. The work you do outside of session will reinforce the skills and tools you learn and will truly help illuminate your growth and development.
